IELTS Academic vs General Training: Which One Do You Need?

Choosing the wrong IELTS version wastes your fee and your score, since Academic and General Training aren’t interchangeable for most purposes.

IELTS Academic

Required for university admission at undergraduate or postgraduate level, and for most professional registration bodies.

IELTS General Training

Required for immigration purposes (UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand skilled/family visas) and for below-degree study or work experience routes.

What’s different

Listening and Speaking are identical in both versions. Reading and Writing differ — General Training uses more everyday, workplace-style texts and tasks, while Academic uses academic-style passages and a graph/chart description in Task 1.

How to be sure

Check your university’s offer letter or your visa category’s official requirements before booking — the version matters more than the score itself if you book the wrong one.
