PTE Academic vs PTE Core: Which Should You Take?
Last updated: August 15, 2026
Short answer: take PTE Academic if you’re applying to a university, anywhere in the world. Take PTE Core if your goal is Canadian immigration — specifically Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program — since Core is the version Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) actually accepts. The two scores are not interchangeable: a PTE Academic result taken for a university application will not be accepted for an Express Entry profile, and vice versa.

PTE Core CLB Score Guide
To reach Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 9 — a common target for maximising Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points — applicants generally need approximately 79–83 in each PTE Core module. CLB 7, the minimum threshold for Federal Skilled Worker eligibility, maps to roughly 60–64 per module (source: IRCC.com, PTE Core for Immigration 2026). Scores convert to CRS points the same way IELTS General Training or CELPIP scores do.
The One Exception to Know
PTE Core does not work for Canada’s Study Direct Stream (SDS) — that pathway still specifically requires IELTS General Training with a minimum of 6.0 in each band. If you’re applying to study in Canada under SDS rather than through Express Entry, PTE Core won’t help you, regardless of your score.
Decision Framework
- Am I applying to a university anywhere, including Canada? Take PTE Academic.
- Am I applying for Canadian Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program? Take PTE Core.
- Am I applying to study in Canada under the Study Direct Stream specifically? Neither PTE version works — you need IELTS General Training.
- Could I need both a study permit now and permanent residency later? You may eventually need both PTE Academic (or IELTS) for admission and PTE Core (or IELTS General Training) for immigration — budget for that possibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my PTE Academic score for Canadian Express Entry?
No. If you took PTE Academic for a university application, that result does not transfer to an Express Entry profile — you need a separate PTE Core test specifically for immigration purposes.
Is PTE Core easier than PTE Academic?
They’re similarly structured and scored, but PTE Core’s content is built around everyday and workplace-relevant English rather than academic content, which some test-takers find more approachable — though this varies by individual.
Does PTE Core work for a Canadian study visa?
It depends on the pathway. PTE Core is accepted for some study permit routes, but not for the Study Direct Stream (SDS), which specifically requires IELTS General Training with a minimum of 6.0 in each band.
Does ELP coach for PTE Core specifically?
ELP’s live PTE batches cover PTE Academic in depth; since PTE Core shares the same integrated-skills format, the core techniques transfer directly. Message on WhatsApp to confirm which version you need and the current batch schedule.
