How to Write a Band 7+ IELTS Academic Task 1 Overview
Last updated: July 19, 2026
The overview is the single most important part of IELTS Academic Task 1, yet most students either skip it or bury it among the details — capping their Task Achievement score.

What an overview actually is
It’s a short paragraph (2-3 sentences) summarising the main trends or key features of the chart, graph, or diagram — without any specific numbers or data points.
The Band 7 checklist
- Identify the two or three most significant overall trends or comparisons
- Do not include specific figures — that belongs in the body paragraphs
- Place it right after your introduction, not at the end
A common mistake
Writing “the chart shows information about X” is not an overview — it restates the question instead of summarising the data’s main story.
Practice tip
Before writing any details, ask yourself: “if I could only say three sentences about this chart, what would they be?” That’s your overview.
