OET vs IELTS for Nurses Going to the UK: Which Should You Take?

Both OET and IELTS are accepted by the NMC for UK nursing registration, so the choice comes down to which format suits you better, not which is officially preferred.

OET advantages for nurses

All tasks are healthcare-context based — Listening features consultations, Reading uses clinical texts, and Writing is a referral letter. Many nurses find this more relevant and less abstract than general IELTS topics.

IELTS advantages

More test centres and dates may be available, and if you’re already familiar with general IELTS preparation resources, that familiarity can help.

What the NMC requires

Always confirm the current NMC-accepted grade/band for your registration route before choosing, since requirements are reviewed periodically.

Our honest recommendation

If you’re a working nurse who finds general topics harder to relate to than clinical ones, OET is usually the more natural fit.
